What Is It? How Can It Help Me?

Sports massage therapy can benefit everyone, not just sportspeople. So what is it?

Here’s a general definition: “The scientific manipulation of soft tissue for injury prevention and therapeutic purposes, involving the restoration to normal functional activity of the various structures of the body”. This means that injuries to soft tissue are encouraged to heal by applying specific pressure and movements to the injured area after the acute stage.

Over time this process is enhanced by providing rehabilitation therapy in the form of appropriate exercises, mobility and flexibility advice. This rehabilitation process will continue until the client can resume normal activity without discomfort.

However, it is vital that a thorough diagnosis is reached prior to commencing treatment. Be aware that Sports Massage involves manipulation to deep muscle tissue and so can be painful. Although the benefits are well worth it!
